ABOUT

Kathleen Theodora Bullen was born 23 August 1934 in Adelaide, South Australia. Her parents were Duncan Nathaniel George, a pastoralist who held the lease on Bararie Station, Birdsville Track, and his wife, Kathleen Anna McGreevy, formerly a florist at the Hotel Australia, Sydney. Her parents were born in England and Ireland, respectively.

During her childhood, Kate lived in various South Australian country towns, Nairne, Quorn and Freeling among them. She completed her secondary schooling at St. Aloysius College, Adelaide, with academic honours. Before her marriage, she qualified as a radiographer.

In 1956, Kate married Lionel Bullen. Together they had seven children.

In the years leading up to her retirement, Kate studied at the North Adelaide School of Arts, Stanley Street, North Adelaide. When she retired, she and Lionel relocated from Adelaide to Watervale, in the Clare Valley, where most of the art works on this site were completed.

Kate  and Lionel were members of the Mt Horrocks Historical Society as well as a number of regional art groups, including the Burra Regional Art Group. During this period, Kate exhibited in regional and metropolitan galleries and won a number of art prizes.

In 2009, Kate and Lionel moved to Mount Gambier, South Australia. Lionel died in 2014. Kate died 12 March 2021.

This site was created to preserve Kate Bullen's artistic legacy.

Her family are aware of paintings sold and gifted which are not recorded here. If you have a painting by Kate Bullen that is not featured on this site, please email a clear photo to include in the gallery. We, her family, would be grateful for your help to preserve her artistic legacy.

Please note, the images of Kate's paintings have been copied from photographs taken of framed works before they were exhibited and sold. As a result, a considerable number of images lack clarity. Others have been cropped due to the constraints of this site.
